Sage Steele is best known for co-hosting the ESPN programs “SportsCenter” and “NBA Countdown,” on the former of which she covered every NBA Finals from 2012 to 2020. She also contributed to such other ESPN shows as “First Take,” “SportsNation,” and “Mike & Mike.”
Early Life and Education
Sage Steele was born on November 28, 1972 in the Panama Canal Zone. She is the daughter of Mona, who has Irish and Italian ancestry, and Gary, who is African-American and was a star athlete in the Army. Steele has two brothers named Courtney and Chad. Due to her father’s career in the Army, she moved around often with her family, living in such countries as Greece and Belgium. Back in the United States in 1984, Steele attended Thomas B. Doherty High School in Colorado Springs, Colorado for two years. The family subsequently moved to Carmel, Indiana, where Steele went to Carmel High School. After graduating in 1990, she attended Indiana University Bloomington, from which she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in sports communication in 1995.
Television Sportscasting
Steele began her television sportscasting career at WSBT-TV in South Bend, Indiana, serving as both a producer and reporter from 1995 to 1997. She then moved to WISH-TV in Indianapolis, where she did sports reporting on weekdays and weekend mornings from 1997 to 1998. Steele covered major teams such as the Indianapolis Colts and the Indiana Pacers, as well as local college and high school sports. Next, from 1998 to 2001, she did sports reporting for WFTS-TV in Tampa, Florida. Steele also contributed to Fox Sports Florida. She covered the major teams in the region, including the Orlando Magic and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After her time in Florida, Steele moved to the newly formed Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic in Bethesda, Maryland, where she anchored the network’s nightly local sports news show “SportsNite.” She served as both an anchor and reporter at CSN Mid-Atlantic from 2001 to 2007.
